Understanding Neck Pain

Neck pain is common and can affect people of all ages and in all stages of life. Symptoms may develop suddenly, come on gradually through repetitive loading, or persist over time.

Common Causes of Neck Pain:

The Physio Pilates Proactive Approach

Your goals. Your recovery. Our support.

At PPP we will start by listening to your story and get a solid understanding of how your symptoms are impacting your daily life.  We will do a thorough assessment to figure out which muscles and joints are involved and create an individualised treatment plan to suit. The treatment plan can include manual therapy, dry needling or other modalities and targeted strength, or clinical Pilates exercises.

We want you to feel heard and supported on your healing and strength journey and for you to feel confident in your treatment plan.

What to expect at your first appointment

  1. Understand your symptoms
  2. Complete a thorough assessment
  3. Develop a treatment plan tailored to you
  4. Build long-term confidence

How Can Physiotherapy Help?

Our physiotherapists can assess and manage a range of painful neck conditions, helping you recover, improve your strength and return to your usual activities.

While every presentation is different, our approach generally focuses on three key stages.

1. Settle Symptoms and Restore Movement

We’ll identify ways to help manage your pain, improve comfortable movement and modify activities where needed. This may include hands-on treatment, practical advice and strategies to help you remain active within your current abilities.

2. Build Strength and Progress Your Activity

As your symptoms improve, we’ll introduce and progressively advance exercises suited to your needs. This may include strengthening the muscles around your neck and shoulders, improving mobility and control, and gradually increasing your tolerance to everyday activities or exercise.

The goal is to build your capacity so that you can do more with confidence.

3. Return to Your Goals and Build Long-Term Resilience

Whether you want to return to exercise, sports, gardening, work, or you simply want to move more comfortably, we’ll work with you towards those goals.

We’ll also help you develop the strength and physical capacity to support your long-term neck health and maintain the activities you enjoy.

Each individual with neck pain is different, and your treatment should be too. We’ll guide you through each stage of your recovery and help you progress at a pace that suits your needs.

Pilates for Neck Pain

Pilates can be a useful part of your neck pain recovery and/or management, helping you develop strength, movement control and confidence as you recover.

At Physio Pilates Proactive, our physiotherapists use their Pilates training alongside other evidence-based rehabilitation strategies to create a program suited to your individual needs.

Your exercises will be tailored to your current abilities and progressed as you improve, helping you build the strength and physical capacity needed to return to the activities you enjoy.

Neck Pain FAQs

Not always. Many neck conditions can be assessed clinically, and imaging isn’t routinely needed at the outset. Your physiotherapist can determine whether further investigation or medical review is appropriate based on your symptoms and examination.

In many cases, modifying your activity rather than stopping completely is a good starting point. Your physiotherapist can help you adjust the type, intensity and amount of exercise to suit your symptoms and gradually rebuild your capacity.

These noises are common and don’t necessarily indicate damage. However, clicking accompanied by significant pain, swelling, catching or locking warrants further assessment.

Most neck pain can be helped with physiotherapy. Some pain, especially if caused by a traumatic event, requires further medical assessment, so a thorough physiotherapy assessment is important.

Yes. Exercise, physical activity and an individualised management plan are recommended components of any osteoarthritis care. Treatment can help improve pain, strength and function, even when changes are present on an X-ray

Recovery depends on the underlying problem, its severity, your goals and how you respond to treatment. Your physiotherapist will discuss realistic expectations and review your progress along the way.
